The Ho Chi Minh city Hall is located in a large area bordering Pasteur Street (in the west), Ly Tu Trong Street in the North, Dong Khoi street on the East and Le Thanh Ton in the South. Under French colonial, this was known as Xa Tay palace, Doc Ly palace and headquarters of city council. Then, it was changed into Town Hall. Period 1954-1975, it was also called as Saigon City Hall. After April 30, 1975 up to now, it is the Ho Chi Minh city Hall.

The construction of this building was noted by colonial officials in 1871 and years onwards. But it is not until 1898 that the building was officially constructed in accordance with architect Gardes’s design. The decoration of the building was firstly proposed according to Ruffier artist’s drawings, but later it was assigned to the artist Bonnet. In 1909 the building was inaugurated.

The building’s architecture is quite simple in general. The middle section is a high point tower; two roofs are oposite in two sides and slightly lower than the main tower. In terms of decoration, in addition to the vignettes, there are three sculpted statues. They are statues of a woman and a child controlling a group of violent animals (in the middle) and two other women in positions of swords (in either the left, right). 100 years ago, this building is considered as one of big and old buildings of Saigon. At that time, looking forward from Ben Nghe port is a space but now it is Nguyen Hue Boulevard.

As the headquarters of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, the building has marked historic events and great demonstrations of Vietnamese people struggling for jobs in 1937. A half of million people launched a ceremony of the Provisional Southern Administrative Committee dated August 25, 1945. Many other rallies and marches took place in front of  the headquarters of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee on occasion of great ceremonies after 1975. Especially in front of the building is a flower garden where the statue of Uncle Ho and the children of sculptor Diep Minh Chau.
