The architecture of Independence Palace

When talking about Saigon with characteristic and unique architecture, people usually mention to the Independence Palace with its important historical role to Vietnam country and its position on economics, politics, and society to the whole Southeast Asia as well as in the world.

The façade of the Independence Palace is on the three- way intersection Nam Ky Khoi Nghia and Le Duan street. It has area of 15 hectares. On this site, on February 23, 1863, French colonial General De lagrandière laid the first brick for its construction, and named Dinh Norodom. Dinh Norodom was built and completed after 3 years; this was the headquarter for French colonial in Indochina.

During the colonial era, this was the headquarter of French Generals and also known as Palais Norodom. In 1865, according to newspaper Courier de Saigon: “the first related studies shown that building a palace as a forever headquarter for French officials replaced temporary tube houses”. And the Palais Norodom was one of massive palaces built with this purpose, as the design of architect Hermite. According to historical documents, the first stone of the palace was manually placed by Admiral De Lagrandière on February 23, 1863. This historic stone was taken in Bien Hoa, in square shape with each side of 50 cm, inside holes of the stone contains the current coins made of gold, silver, copper, were carved with King Napoleon III. The material of the palace was largely transferred from France. Due to the France-German War (occurring in 1870), until 1873, the construction was completed and the decoration for the Independence Palace lasted two years (1875). At that time the Unification Avenue (now Le Duan Street) was called Norodom Boulevard which was still muddy and wet. This palace is considered one of the most beautiful villas in Southeast Asia. The façade was described with 80 meters wide, inside the living room had capacity of 800 people. Surrounded by extensive gardens with all kinds of trees, it looked spectacular. In front of the Reunification Palace, a vintage cannon is located at the foot of the flagpole that makes the palace more majestic.

Many political events have occurred for nearly a century under French colonial era. After the defeat Dien Bien Phu and Genève 1954 agreement, Norodom Palace was handed back to Vietnam. In 1954, the Ngo Dinh Diem was seated on Norodom Palace. On October 26, 1956 Norodom Palace was renamed “Palace of Independence”, ie the President Palace. After bombing by two pilots: Nguyen Van Cu and Pham Phu Quoc (dated February 27, 1962), the Norodom palace was entirely destroyed; hence, Diem government decided to rebuild and named it the Palace of Independence.

The construction time lasted three years, it is completed on October 31, 1966. During the construction, about 6 months, the construction was delayed due to domestic politic problems in the Saigon government; the government of Ngo Dinh Diem was defeated on November, 1963.

Architecturally, according to Ngo Viet Thu architect, from the inside to the outside the building, all architecture represents a traditional oriental legend, a holy ritual under customary of the nation. The center of the Reunification Palace is the Credential room whose position is compared with Thai Hoa Palace in the Hue imperial Citadel.

The design of architect Ngo Viet Thu

On 8 April 1975, Nguyen Thanh Trung, a pilot of the Vietnam Air Force and an undetected communist spy, flew an F-5E aircraft from Biên Hòa Air Base to bomb the palace, but caused no significant damage. At 10:45 on 30 April 1975, a tank of the North Vietnamese Army bulldozed through the main gate, ending the Vietnam War.
