Visiting Private Traditional Medical Museum in Saigon

Located in a corner street of Hoang Du Khuong, district 10, FiTo is the first private traditional Medical Museum in Vietnam.

The museum was established basing on the idea, passion and collection process in many years of Mr. Le Khac Tam, a man used to work in medical field and want to preserve valuable properties and honors Vietnamese traditional medicine, and also help those who concern the traditional medicine take part in and do research.

The museum was built in 2003, put into operation in 2007 with 6 floors and 18 rooms in total area of 600 square meters. In addition, the FiTo was designed by wood and sophisticated patterns and the owner used ancient wooden window frames which bought from Northern plains makes space ancient and cozy.

The museum has more than 3, 000 precious exhibits related to Vietnam traditional medicine from the Stone Age to now: medicinal root slicers, 2500 year-old medicine-pounding pestle and other medicinal root slicers which are from Buddhist priest Tue Tinh’s countryside and the great physician Hai Thuong Lan Ong – Le Huu Trac.

In addition, the museum has a collection of ancient medical cups from 16th century, types of scales, medical pestles, Vietnamese scales, Western scales, wooden thin planks for medicine bills and prescription. Medical pots have been collected from locals such as Ha Dong (Hanoi), Hoi An (Quang Nam), Lai Thieu (Binh Duong), etc.

Moreover, Fito also has enormous Chinese character collection of books with over 100,000 pages, such as: Nam duoc than hieu, Y tong tam linh – Dr. Hai Thuong Lan Ong (28 chapters, 66 books) which is known as Vietnamese traditional medicine encyclopedia.

Visiting the FiTo, tourists contemplate the great work – Vietnam bach gia y – which are engraved by wood and wrote a hundreds of famous physicians from 12th century to 20th century. The most original object is nacre picture which describes the traditional medical life of Vietnamese in Thuoc Bac town, Ben Thanh market, Hue imperial city…

After visiting, tourists can have a chance to prepare medicine by cut, pound, taste a medicine and treat and sell medicine here.
